NEW HAMBURG -- Tracy Holland has a "can-do" attitude she is trying to teach to her students.

Holland teaches third-grade at Kelso C-7 Elementary School in New Hamburg.

"I strive everyday to have a classroom full of energy, excitement and a positive attitude toward learning," Holland said. "I want all my children to think they can do it. This type of attitude helps in creating respect and success."

Holland said her job means making sure each child learns.

"Some children learn faster, and with some children it takes a little longer," she said. "As an educator, I must treat each child as an individual, seeing each one's needs and talents and teaching to those specific needs."

Textbooks are important in her class, but not every lesson comes from the books.

"I also teach the children that respect is a very important quality to possess," she said. "I want them to have respect for themselves, others and the world."

She also wants them to have confidence in their abilities. "I want my students to want to make a difference in this world."

Holland said rewards for a teacher come every day.

"There is a wonderful feeling I get when I see a child grasp and learn something that I have taught," she said. "Seeing a child achieve reminds me every day how important my job is and to always give it my all. I love what I do."

Holland earned a bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State University and is in her fifth year of teaching. She is working on a master's degree in elementary administration. She lives in Benton with her 3-year-old son Coby. They enjoy playing ball, reading books and spending time with family.
