ORAN -- In addition to typical subjects first- and second-graders study, children in Tracy Holland's class at Guardian Angel school in Oran learn about the world around them.
"In my classroom I not only teach what is in the textbooks, but I also teach the child about all the beautiful things God has given us, and how to appreciate them and take care of them," Holland said.
The youngsters, Holland said, are concerned about the Earth and the environment.
"They are also very aware of the many problems in our world," she said. "The students enjoy discussing solutions to these problems."
Students are also anxious to help.
"They want to make a difference in this world," Holland said. "I hope and pray this is something they will take with them through the rest of their lives."
Holland is in her third year of teaching. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1990, with a bachelor's degree in education. She is now working toward a master's degree at Southeast in administration.
"There are many rewards in teaching," she said. "There is a wonderful feeling when I see a child grasp and learn something that I have taught.
"Seeing a child achieve and progress reminds me every day how important my job is and to always give it my all," Holland said. "I strive every day to have a classroom which is full of energy and excitement about learning."
Holland resides in Benton. She has a 1-year-old son named Coby Lee. "He fills all my days with excitement and surprises," she said.
She also enjoys cooking, reading and sports.
