SCOTT CITY -- Second-grade teacher Shelly Bohn hasn't always wanted to be a teacher. Bohn, who is in her 10th year of teaching in Scott City schools, started her college career with a business degree in mind. She changed her mind, however, and is happy she did.

"I realized that the business world was not for me and decided to get a degree in education," said the Scott City High School graduate. "Not once have I regretted that decision."

Bohn said she enjoys sharing new skills with students and keeping them motivated when the going gets tough. She said she also gets a special thrill when she sees a student teach one of his peers a skill she has helped them to master.

"You have to make it a fun experience," said Bohn of learning experiences. "It is a challenge to keep a child motivated because it's very easy for them to get frustrated when we first start a new lesson."

One of her favorite teaching experiences didn't take place in a classroom. Bohn fondly remembers her feelings about a visit to the school by then U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle.

"The entire student body waited on the school lawn, and I still get goose bumps just thinking about how the motorcade looked when it pulled into the school drive," she said. "It was a thrill and an honor to watch him make his way around to see all of the children."
