Stan Seiler, a sixth-grade teacher at Alma Schrader Elementary in Cape Girardeau, believes one of the best educational tools is fun.

"I try to bring as much excitement into the classroom as possible," Seiler said. "I hope that excitement then transfers to the students. I love to see them excited about the fun things we do."

Seiler has taught in the Cape Girardeau School District for four years, but this is his first year at Alma Schrader. He taught for three years at Washington School following his graduation with a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University.

When Seiler talks about fun in the classroom, it can mean anything from building "mousetrap cars" and geodesic domes to participating in a "fiesta" while studying about Mexico.

"I like to use equipment in science to build interest and then let the students explore and learn instead of passively learn," he said.

Seiler said he believes he was born to be a teacher.

"I believe teaching matches my talents more closely than any other occupation," he said. "I knew I wanted to work around children, and I wanted to have a maximum impact on their lives. Teaching allows me to use the talents given me in a positive way."

Teaching also provides for some enjoyable returns, Seiler said.

"When a student comes to me at the end of the year and says, `Thanks for being my teacher,' and when I teach a particular concept and I can see the light bulb of knowledge, that makes me feel that I've really accomplished something great," he said.

Seiler's married. He enjoys golf, reading and video games in his spare time. He also likes "anything to do with nature."

He said teaching is particularly gratifying in a school where parents and colleagues are supportive.

"I have also had an opportunity to teach students who are interested, motivated and eager to learn," Seiler said. "Teaching is really very exciting."
