Carlos L. Spence, 27, was killed when the car he was a passenger in ran off the road and struck a tree on Grapevine Trail between Thebes and McClure around 11 p.m. He was wearing his seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car's driver, 28-year-old Adam R. Ford of McClure, wasn't wearing a seat belt and received only minor injuries. He was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Charges against Ford are pending, police said.
