The copy machine is jammed again, the phone has been ringing off the hook, your boss wants that report NOW and your computer just crashed.
That's enough to get anyone's morning off to a bad start and add a little stress to their life.
Stress in the workplace doesn't always start in the workplace. Anything that might have gone wrong as you tried to start your morning could be responsible: The alarm didn't go off; you spilled coffee on your good blouse; you were just informed your son volunteered you to bring two dozen cookies to class today; road crews were working and you had to detour. Stress builds and by the time you reach the office it might not take much to set you off.
Stress in the workplace can damage the effectiveness of workers. Those who aren't producing as they should begin the affect the organization as a whole.
So what can you do? First, understand that you aren't alone. If you're stressed, chances are someone else is the office is stressed as well. Second, identify the causes of your stress. It's hard to fix something if you don't know what's broken. And last, remember that you are in control, not the stressful factors you've been dealing with.
Follow a few of these guidelines to see if you can relieve some of your tensions:
* At break time, instead of heading for a soda or coffee, head for the stairs. A quick trip up and down the stairs will revitalize your body.
* If possible, stand up and stretch. Reach toward the ceiling; get the blood pumping. Center and focus on yourself, not your problems.
* Take deep breaths. Inhale slowly, counting to ten. Hold your breath for a moment or two and then exhale slowly.
* If you sit at a computer all day, the eye strain alone may be a stress factor. Focus your attention away from the screen for a few minutes. Try rolling your head around occasionally to loosen those tense neck muscles.
Studies have also shown that what surrounds workers can help relieve stress. An aquarium can be a peaceful addition to the workplace. Just watching the fish for a few moments puts some workers at ease.
Plants in the office have been shown to be stress reducers as well. The greenery often makes an office appear more welcome. They can even help buffer noise and reduce echo levels. Stopping your work to tend the plants for a few minutes could be just the break you need.
Whatever the reasons behind your stress, remember you're not alone. Don't dwell on your stressful situations, but instead take steps to make your life more stress-free.
