Moved by the suffering of area residents during this summer's flood and by the outpouring of compassion in the community, Jane Curl sought some way to help.
"I thought sandbagging would probably be too strenuous," Curl said. "I thought I could do more by producing a shirt that could be sold for flood relief efforts."
Curl started her own screen printing business, Witness Designs, a few months ago, and the idea of designing a shirt that could somehow be used to aid flood victims appealed to her.
"I also thought it would be interesting to have some type of memorabilia, or commemorative item from the flood," Curl.
The result is a shirt design that incorporates various newspaper headlines from the flood. Also on the shirt is the logo of the American Red Cross.
Now, with the floodwaters finally receded, Curl hopes the proceeds from the t-shirts can be used for help in the clean-up process.
With half the proceeds from the shirts going to the Red Cross for local flood relief efforts, Curl has raised $400-$500 for the agency.
"We're going to do one more run on the shirts near the end of September," she said. "The Red Cross location on Gerhardt Street is the pick-up point for those, and there are some shirts available now."
The shirts sell for about $10 and are available in adult sizes. For more information on how to obtain a commemorative t-shirt, contact the Red Cross at 335-9471.
