The Cape Girardeau Bicentennial Commission unveiled its official Cape Girardeau Bicentennial T-shirt Thursday, during a brief ceremony held on the front porch of the historic Glenn House in downtown Cape Girardeau.
The unveiling kicks off a sales campaign of the T-shirts, which commission chairman Martha Bender said will finance all of the bicentennial commission's activities and events during the coming year.
The T-shirt sells for $12. It is now on sale at JCPenny in the West Park Mall, Schnucks Food Store, Boatmen's Bank, Books 'n Things on the Southeast Missouri State University campus, and Horizon Screen Printing.
The T-shirt is off-white in color with a blue background depicting figures of people who settled in the small Mississippi River trading post community at the close of the 1700s. "The silhouettes in green that depict the skyline of the downtown area are as we see Cape Girardeau today," Bender explained. "The founder of Cape Girardeau, Don Louis Lorimier, is depicted riding on horseback, carrying with him the deed of Cape Girardeau."
The design was created by artist Don Greenwood.
Bender urged citizens of Cape Girardeau to support the bicentennial commission by purchasing and wearing the T-shirt. "By wearing the bicentennial T-shirt, we'll also be promoting the heritage of Cape Girardeau," she said.
Bender said organizations may also arrange to have their logo printed on the sleeve of the shirt.
