School board members can achieve certification in two ways: completing 30 hours of education programs at MSBA workshops and seminars or by taking an exam.

Both methods require board members to be knowledgeable in areas including school finance, school law, personnel, policy-making, goal-setting, communications, curriculum, facilities, students services.
