CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- A fire in Caruthersville turned tense after a piece of suspected military ordnance was discovered.

The incident began at 4:43 a.m. Wednesday when the Caruthersville Fire Department responded to a house fire at 806 Franklin Ave., according to a news release from the Caruthersville Police Department. Firefighters extinguished the fire, and during a salvage and overhaul of the home, several firefighters noticed a foreign device believed to be a piece of military ordnance in a bedroom.

The residence was cleared, and the Caruthersville Police Department secured the scene until the Sikeston Department of Public Safety bomb squad arrived.

Contact was made with the U.S. military to respond to the scene and dispose of the suspected ordnance. It is unknown whether the ordnance was a live piece of ammunition or a dud.
