Two Cape Girardeau men were shot by an unknown assailant while they sat in a parked car Saturday night at Jefferson and Hanover.
According to Cape Girardeau police officer Jason Selzer, a Cape Girardeau police officer was working an accident around 10:40 p.m. at Highway 74 and Minnesota when he heard eight or nine shots being fired at Jefferson and Hanover.
The officer went in the direction of the shots and talked to witnesses there who told him that two victims had driven themselves to Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Both victims were treated there and released. One, a 37-year-old man who was reportedly sitting in the passenger seat of the 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix was shot in the back of the head. The driver, age 23, was shot in the hand.
Police said the victims claimed they did not know their assailant, nor did they know why he opened fire.
Police are investigating and attempting to determine the caliber of gun that was used. They are also trying to come up with a description of the suspect.
The names of the victims are being withheld for their own protection until the suspect is apprehended, said Capt. Carl Kinnison.
Selzer said that anyone who has any information about the shooting should contact CrimeStoppers at 332-0500, or the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 335-6621. CrimeStoppers is offering a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
