WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- A suspect was shot in the face when he knocked a Howell County sheriff's deputy off balance while allegedly attempting to flee, discharging the deputy's service gun, authorities said.
The male suspect, who was not immediately identified, was undergoing surgery Friday, Sheriff Bill Shephard said.
The man was being sought on a felony warrant for drug possession that carried a $100,000 bond, Shephard said.
Two patrol cars gave chase after the suspect was spotted in a vehicle with two other people Thursday night, Shephard said.
When they came to a stop south of West Plains, one patrol car pulled behind the vehicle. The other pulled beside the passenger side -- where the suspect was seated.
The deputies stepped out with their guns drawn and ordered the three to put their hands up, Shephard said.
It was at that point that the suspect allegedly attempted to flee.
"When he jumped out, his door hit the patrol car door, and the deputy fell backward," Shephard said.
The deputy's .40-caliber handgun fired a single shot into the man's face, he said.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol was investigating.
The deputy, who was not identified, was placed on paid administrative leave as required by department policy. The deputy is a longtime department member.
