JACKSON, Mo. -- The attorney for a man accused of statutory rape and incest told a judge Monday his intentions to file a change of venue in the case.

Ronald E. Shumate Jr. was in court Monday and formally pleaded not guilty to three class C felony counts of statutory rape and three class D felony counts of incest.

Shumate of Dutchtown, Mo., is alleged to have sexually assaulted a 15-year-old female relative several times between June and September 2001.

Police were alerted to the case when the young woman was admitted to a local hospital's intensive-care unit after attempting suicide.

Appearing before Judge John Grimm Monday, attorney Stephen C. Wilson waived formal reading of the charges, and Shumate maintained his plea of not guilty.

A pretrial hearing for motions is set or April 8.

Shumate is free on $25,000 bond.
