A man accused of robbing a Cape Girardeau gas station at knifepoint was tracked down Wednesday with the help of a police dog.
Henry H. Kennemore III, 29, of 16 N. Ellis St., charged with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action, according to police spokesman Jason Selzer. Bond set at $50,000.
Amoco, 3276 William St., was robbed around 5 a.m. A clerk reported that a hooded man approached the counter and displayed a sharp object, described as a "homemade knife," Selzer said. The man demanded money from the clerk, then fled on foot with $390.
Around 5:30 a.m., the suspect was spotted near Chateau Girardeau, at the intersection of Independence Street and Mount Auburn Road, Selzer said.
A K-9 officer and his dog, Toben, began tracking the suspect through a wooded area behind Chateau Girardeau, he said.
Toben eventually led his handler a wooded area behind Just Kids Daycare, 6 Girardeau Court, where the suspect was arrested.
Nearby, police found all but $1 of the stolen cash, according to the probable cause statement.
Surveillance cameras in the store captured Kennemore robbing the gas station, Selzer said.
At the time of the theft, he had been wearing a blue hooded sweat shirt. The hood was pulled onto his head and cinched tight, but his face was visible and he was not wearing a mask.
