Suspect arrested in connection to Wednesday shooting in Sikeston

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A Sikeston man has turned himself in for a shooting that critically injured another.

The Sikeston Department of Public Safety reported that Raymond Ray Mitchell, 23, is in custody at the Scott County Jail. Mitchell is charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for the assault on 23-year-old Eric Tucker of Sikeston.

At 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, the department received a call of shots fired at Delmar and Dorothy streets. Upon the officers' arrival, they found Tucker in the roadway with a severe gunshot wound to the head.

The department and EMS began giving medical aid to Tucker, who was taken to an area hospital. He is reported in critical condition.

According to Scott County Jail personnel, Mitchell turned himself in at 11:56 p.m. Thursday and is being held without bond.

As the investigation began, the SEMO Major Case Squad was activated. Several members of Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control responded to assist, according to Lt. Jim McMillen with DPS.

"With over 20 hours of intense investigation, we developed enough information to charge a subject with the assault," McMillen said in a news release.
