The comforts of home are half a world away for the thousands of military personnel serving in the war in Iraq. But St. Francis Medical Center is working to send goods and provide aid and comfort to the soldiers and their families.
"We want our co-workers, family members and friends to know that we miss them and we are thinking of them," said Steven Bjelich, president and CEO of St. Francis Healthcare System.
"We are praying for their quick and safe return home."
The Friends of St. Francis started mail and care package drops to employees, medical staff members, volunteers and their family members who are serving overseas. The effort is similar to the hospital's response to the Gulf War 12 years ago.
"When we did this during Desert Storm, the service personnel really appreciated getting cards, letters, personal care items and goodies from people back home," said Connie Laurentius, a St. Francis administrative assistant coordinating the effort.
"The notes of thanks they sent back brought tears to my eyes."
Cards and letters are mailed weekly, with the Friends paying the postage. Care package items are also being collected and shipped to the troops. Financial donations are being accepted.
Additionally, monthly medical insurance premiums for employees called to serve will be paid by the Caring Fund, an employee-supported financial reserve.
"This aid will lift some of the financial hardships faced by our families who have loved ones overseas," said William Kiel, executive director of the St. Francis Foundation. "We hope it will help provide peace of mind for our soldiers and their families."
