METROPOLIS, Ill. -- The 17th annual Superman Celebration continues here today.
The event is held in the mythical hometown of one of the most celebrated superheroes in popular culture.
Activities include a parade, a volleyball tournament, a Clark Kent-Lois Lane pool tournament, a car show, a Little Miss Supergirl and Mr. Superboy pageant, and a Super Dog contest.
Today, Gerard Christopher, who played Superboy on TV, will sign autographs at the Superman Statue on the town square and at the Super Museum.
The celebration revolves around a carnival midway in the middle of the Metropolis business district. A large circus tent north of the Superman statue will house much of the entertainment, which will include, rock, blues and country bands, along with talent shows and magic acts.
Also today, a 15-, 31- and 62-mile bicycle tour will begin at 8 a.m., followed by a performance by magician Bill Coomer at 9 and the Superman Parade at 10.
Entertainment includes the country-rock band Soundpruf from 1 to 3 p.m. and 61 South, a blues outfit performing at 7:30 p.m.
A fireworks display will begin at Fort Massac State Park at 10 tonight.
Sunday's activities include an arts and crafts fair and food fair along Market Street, an antique and classic car show at Fort Massac, performances by barbershop quartets, professional wrestling, a mini-tractor pull and gospel music.
