A week before the election that will introduce two new faces to the Cape Girardeau City Council, a familiar one announced his decision to resign from his seat.
Trent Summers has been the Ward 3 representative since 2011. He said his decision to step down from that position was made with his family in mind.
The councilman and his wife, who are expecting their second child, have started moving to a new home. Summers said they always had plans to build a house on property they owned outside the city and this relocation is one step closer to that future home.
The councilman said his decision was not one he made lightly. He determined that resignation would be the best move "after talking with the city manager and the city attorney so there would be no challenge to my integrity or that of the council."
While his time as Ward 3 councilman was briefer than planned, Summers said, "it's been an honor to serve the residents of Cape Girardeau."
