CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Francis Summers, a former sixth-grade teacher and coach in Cape Girardeau represented Eastern Illinois University's College of Education and Professional Studies as faculty marshal for the university's afternoon commencement ceremony Dec. 10.

Summers recently retired from the university as chair of the Department of Student Teaching and director of the Office of Clinical Experiences. He joined the EIU faculty in 1965, after earning a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University, a master's in school administration and elementary education from Southern Illinois University and a doctorate in elementary education and educational psychology from the University of Illinois.
