Made from playballs, these brainiac caps helped students learn about how the brain controls different areas of the body.
The summer school enrichment program at West Lane and at all Jackson schools ended June 20.
West Lane had five fourth-grade classes and three fifth-grade classes. One art class was available. The theme "All About You" covered areas in fitness, nutrition, body systems and the central nervous system.
In the mornings, the students worked out to an exercise video by Richard Simmons. A fourth-grade teacher, Andrea Sachse, was responsible for the brainiac caps.
Visual symbols, like hands, legs and eyeballs, indicated how the brain controlled these parts of the body and enabled things like speech and balance as well.
The students learned about specific topics through speakers who came to visit the school.
Heidi Crowden spoke about bicycle safety; Scott Wren about the heart and lung; Dr. Scott Gibbs about the brain. Main Street Fitness sent speakers as well.
