The Jackson and Cape Girardeau parks and recreation departments have a variety of activities scheduled this summer.
Both cities have sports camps and youth programs. The camps include bowling, golf, jogging and tennis in Jackson, and in Cape Girardeau two-week sports camps feature a different sport each day. There are also bowling and tennis camps and a peewee gym class for children 2 to 5 years old.
There are also summer volleyball leagues, a sand volleyball league and a summer basketball league in Cape Girardeau.
There are a variety of softball tournaments planned this summer at the Shawnee Softball Complex, beginning this weekend with the Amateur Softball Association state girls fast-pitch tournament. The tournament is for girls 16 and younger. An estimated 30 teams will participate.
On July 24, the Cape Junior Outdoor Tennis Tournament will be held at the Arena Park tennis courts.
Jackson has initiated an arts adventure and crafts creation program that started Monday and an explore your world program that started Tuesday.
Jackson's annual Homecomers celebration will include 5K and children's mile runs at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17.
On Sept. 18, the Coors Pure Water 2000 Triathlon will be held in Cape Girardeau.
Both Jackson and Cape Girardeau have plenty of activities scheduled this summer.
