Subcommittee, ad hoc panel to meet on names

Cape Girardeau School District Superintendent Dan Steska went into Monday night's school board meeting thinking the board would decide on the names for the new fifth- through eighth-grade centers that will open next fall.

But by the end of the meeting the only thing the board members agreed upon was that they didn't agree on any of the names except Central Junior High School for the seventh- and eighth-grade center.

As a result, board president Bob Fox appointed members Sharon Mueller and Steve Trautwein to serve on a subcommittee that will meet with the ad hoc naming committee that came up with 41 suggested names at the beginning of the month.

Through discussion, the ad hoc committee narrowed its suggestions and recommended to the board the names Central Intermediate Center or Central Intermediate School for the fifth- and sixth-grade center, Central Junior High School for the seventh- and eighth-grade center and either L.J. Schultz Learning Campus or L.J. Schultz Campus for the combined fifth- through eighth-grade campus on Caruthers.

The board will meet again Feb. 25 to discuss the outcome of the meeting between the ad hoc and subcommittees and possibly adopt names for the two buildings and the campus.
