Students in grades 7 through 12 may work individually or in pairs for more than $100,000 in U.S. savings bonds in a competition to invent battery-powered devices. Students in grades 7 through 12 may work individually or in pairs for more than $100,000 in U.S. savings bonds in a competition to invent battery-powered devices.

The contest is sponsored by Duracell and the National Science Teachers Association. Every student who enters will receive a prize, and 100 ideas will be winners.

Entries from grades seven to nine and from grades 10 to 12 will be judged separately. In both categories, the first place winner receives a $20,000 bonds and two second place winners receive $10,000 bonds.

Students on winning teams will divide prize money equally. Sponsoring teachers of the top three winners in each category will receive $2,000 gift certificates for computer equipment. Teachers sponsoring all 100 winners receive gifts.

To help students power their winning ideas, the competition is offering directions and a parts list via the National Science Teachers Association's Internet site. Students must collect or purchase parts listed on the web site to complete the circuit. The site can be found at www.nsta.org/programs97/duracell.htm

Deadline for receipt of entries is Jan. 14, 1998.
