Students take holiday story on the road

The fifth grade class from St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School took its Thanksgiving spirit on the road to entertain residents of eight nursing homes in Cape Girardeau. The visits served as the project chosen by Patty Heisserer's class. Students dressed as pilgrims, Indians and even turkeys to tell the story of Thanksgiving. Handmade cards were given to the residents they visited.

For one Chateau Girardeau resident, the visit brought special memories. Helen Owings fondly recalled the 22 years she spent as a fifth-grade teacher in Morehouse. Several of the children visited with grandparents and friends residing in the homes.

Other St. Vincent de Paul students in kindergarten through eighth grade collected more than 3,000 cans of food which will be donated to FISH, a local food pantry.
