Stress on the job is a 1990s fact of life. How to identify causes of stress in the workplace and how to deal with them effectively is the topic for "Stress Management at Work," the second program in Systematic Stress Management, a special series sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Hospital Fitness and Wellness Center.
The program will be held from 7-8 p.m. Thursday in the Harrison Room at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Program facilitator is Fitness and Wellness Center Director Debbie Leoni, RN.
To register, call 334-9355.
Coming up in the program series are "Communication and Stress" on April 14 and "Life States" on May 19. Both sessions will be held in the Harrison Room from 7-8 p.m.
In "Stress Management at Work," participants learn that "work stress can be a multitude of things," said Leoni. ":It can be relationships with the boss or co-workers, noise levels, deadlines, job security, unstimulaing work and many other issues."
When work stress is prolonged and severe, the risk of experiencing burnout increases. In "Stress Management at Work," participants will learn to identify signs of burnout and methods of dealing with job stress so that daily stressors can be changed to positive motivators.
Leoni said: "The long-term results of stress can be devastating -- heart disease, high blood pressure and ulcers, to name a few."
According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, two-thirds of all office visits to family doctors are stress related.
