Beginning today, several Cape Girardeau streets and parking lots will undergo paving preparations and eventual asphalt overlay.
A news release from the city of Cape Girardeau said the following streets will be improved: North Benton Street, from Themis Street to Independence Street; Themis Street, from Pacific Street to Hanover Street; South Benton Street, from William Street to Jefferson Avenue, and Fountain Street, from Bellevue Street to North Street.
In addition, the following parking lots will be receiving paving preparation and overlay: Broadway Prescription Shop, 710 Broadway; Last Call, 632 Broadway; River Heritage Museum, at the corner of Independence and Frederick streets; and the former Convention and Visitors Bureau building, at the corner of Broadway and Main Street.
Traffic will continue to flow through each work zone, but drivers are asked to use caution around workers and equipment. Work crews will fix driveways, curbs and sidewalks along each project section after paving to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act transportation requirements.
The overlay program, which is paid for by the Transportation Trust Fund, will be ongoing through mid-October. In addition, the asphalt overlay on East Cape Rock Drive that began in late June has been completed. The improvement to Dunklin Street, between Henderson Street and West End Boulevard, is ongoing.
