Independence Street will be closed between Silver Springs and Mount Auburn roads in Cape Girardeau beginning Wednesday.

Local traffic, specifically that related to businesses and Chateau Girardeau, will be notified and their access assigned, according to city officials. Traffic will be reduced to one northbound lane and one southbound lane on Mount Auburn Road.

The closure is related to the widening of Mount Auburn Road from Independence to Route K. The intersection of Mount Auburn Road and Independence Street will be widened and traffic signals added.

The project is being funded through the city's half-cent transportation sales tax and is scheduled for completion in October. For more information, contact city engineer Mark A. Lester at 334-9020.
