Stormwater control projects move ahead in Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau moved ahead with the dozen stormwater control projects approved by voters last spring with the city council's decision Monday to spend $118,000 on engineering services.

The action brings to eight the total number of projects that are being designed, public works director Tim Gramling told the council. In addition, he said, two projects are nearly completed.

When voters approved a half-cent sales tax in April 2008, most of the money was dedicated to new construction of parks and recreation facilities. But $2 million was set aside for stormwater control, and the actions Monday will provide the blueprints for work to be completed later this year and in 2010.

The items approved Monday include:

• Study of the Beavercreek Drive and Breckenridge Branch basin by Morris and Munger Engineers LLC. The firm will be paid up to $14,800 for recommendations to control runoff in the creek that runs just south of Beavercreek Drive.
• Design for controlling stormwater in the Arena Creek area between Broadview Street and Optimist Drive. Waters Engineering Inc. will be paid up to $61,000 for its work.
• Design for the Howell Street and Cape Rock Drive box culvert replacement project. Waters Engineering will receive up to $32,000 for the work.
• Design the Themis Street drainage project in the area west of Silver Springs Road. S.H. Smith & Co. will receive up to $10,040 for the work.

The council also awarded a $157,000 contract to Safety Grooving and Grinding L.P. for grinding treatments to smooth the concrete on Lexington Avenue from Carolina Avenue to Cape Rock Drive and Southern Expressway from Kingshighway to Sprigg Street.
