Although the clouds loomed low and dark, there were no confirmed tornadoes in Southeast Missouri or Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky. issued several tornado warnings throughout the afternoon and early evening.
A possible tornado was reported around 4 p.m. west of Cape Girardeau in Bollinger County, which prompted the weather service to issue the warnings. It was reportedly moving east at 30 miles per hour.
However, a spokesman at the Bollinger County Sheriff's Department said the department was unable to confirm any actual sightings of a tornado touching down.
Similarly, the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department said that there was no confirmation of any tornado touching down in the county, even though an earlier report had suggested that a tornado had touched down shortly before 4:15 p.m. between Jackson and Fruitland and other possible activity around Neeley's Landing.
Because of the Cape Girardeau County report, the weather service issued a tornado warning for Alexander County Illinois. The warning, however, was canceled less than 10 minutes later.
The Union County Sheriff's Department reported that a funnel cloud was spotted east of Anna, Ill., but it never touched down. There was significant hail and wind damage in Jonesboro, a spokesman for the department said. The Mount Glen Road, near Cobden, was also washed out during the storm.
The only significant damage which the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department reported was the uprooting of trees around Trail of Tears State Park.
