Residents of Cape Girardeau County escaped severe weather Wednesday afternoon, but people in other areas weren't so lucky.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area around 2:30 p.m. A line of storms moved through Butler and Bollinger Counties soon afterward.

A spokesman for the Butler County Sheriff's Department said several trees and power lines fell during the storm's rains and high winds, but no injuries were reported.

Charlotte Byland and her family, who live on Highway H in Grassy, barely escaped injury as the storm moved through Bollinger County.

Byland said she heard about the storm warning but wasn't anticipating such severe weather. High winds tore the roof off her shed and knocked a tree through the roof of a mobile home her son was remodeling.

Another tree fell on power lines, and Byland called Black River Electric Cooperative to repair the damage.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms for the area this morning, with clearing skies in the afternoon.
