Retailers had smiles on their faces Monday as big as children opening presents on Christmas Day. The smiles were in response to the better-than-expected turnout at area department stores.

"We don't have exact numbers, but I know sales far exceed our expectations," said Rick Hessenkemper, Venture store manager.

Hessenkemper said more customers were in the store making exchanges, seeking refunds and buying items than he expected.

"Refunds were more than we expected," he said, "but sales were much more than we expected. And that's good."

Hessenkemper said not only was Dec. 26 a good day for sales, the month of December will prove to be above average. He said Monday's brisk sales were the cap to a great month for the his store.

Venture wasn't the only store seeing increased sales and an overall increase in customer traffic. Customers patronizing other stores at West Park Mall had a difficult time finding parking places Monday at certain times.

"We're busier than anticipated," said Jan Knabe, manager of J.C. Penney Co. Inc. "We've had a lot of exchanges and refunds. But a lot of people are here looking for good buys."

Knabe said the day after Christmas is traditionally a day for returns and exchanges. She said Monday's sales were probably better because many people were off from work because Christmas fell on Sunday and people were given a day off on the 26th.

Carol Burford, area sales manager for Famous-Barr, agreed: "They were here the minute the doors opened at 8 a.m. A lot of our discounted merchandise, like Christmas stuff, has gone fast."

Burford said Famous-Barr also experienced a better-than-expected day with respect to sales, exchanges and refunds. She said retailers weren't expecting as much spending by customers but were happy to see the brisk sales.

"We just keep on smiling and look forward to serving the next customer," she said.

Retailers hoped the brisk sales will continue next week.

"We've got the New Year's Day sales coming," one employee reminded.
