Steroid possession results in four-year prison sentence

A Florissant, Mo., man was sentenced to four years in prison Monday by Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Lewis for possession of anabolic steroids.

Jason O. Stevens, 35, was arrested by Missouri State Highway Patrol in April on U.S. 61 and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

The arresting trooper discovered the anabolic steroids after citing Stevens for the DWI, according to the probable-cause statement.

The statement indicated Stevens has one prior alcohol-related conviction from 2002.

Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle said Stevens was sentenced to 30 days jail time for the DWI, which will run concurrently with the prison sentence.

Lewis retained authority over Stevens for 120 days and ordered him to the institutional treatment center at the Department of Corrections for that amount of time.

If Stevens does well in the 120-day program, the judge could order a probation.

Stevens faced penalties of up to seven years in prison for the felony charge and six months in the county jail and a $500 fine for the misdemeanor.

Swingle said he did not recall anyone else being convicted of this type of charge in the county.
