ST. LOUIS -- The city of St. Louis' chief lawyer has resigned after about a year and a half on the job. Winston Calvert told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch only "there are things I want to do that I can't do as city counselor." He declined to elaborate on his future plans. Mayor Francis Slay's chief of staff, Mary Ellen Ponder, said Calvert offered no reason for the resignation he submitted Monday. The deputy city counselor, Mike Garvin, is Calvert's interim replacement. Calvert was a visible figure in Slay's administration on issues such as same-sex marriage, reforming the city's business laws, ride-sharing app Uber's battle to operate in St. Louis and the city's minimum wage.
ST. LOUIS -- A woman is suing St. Louis County and an officer for injuries she sustained when she says she was shot in any eye with a stun gun. Twenty-two-year-old Melnique Logan's lawsuit in U.S. District Court in St. Louis alleges the March incident left her with eye damage and at risk for blindness in one eye. Logan said she was being pummeled by two women as another filmed. After the attackers complied with demands by responding officers to halt the attack, the lawsuit said Logan was shot by officer Lewis Bouwman with a stun gun after she tried to stop the attackers.
ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis man faces federal charges in a September robbery shooting that wounded and potentially paralyzed a U.S. Army veteran as he left a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game with his girlfriend. A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted Kilwa Jones on seven felony counts. They include robbery and assault on federal property, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime and being a felon with a firearm. St. Louis city prosecutors already had charged Jones with assault, robbery and armed criminal action. Authorities allege Jones shot Christopher Sanna. Sanna's mother has said doctors have told the family her son probably will never walk again. Jones' attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said his client will plead not guilty.
