The Louis Lorimier wood carving in Cape Rock Park has recently been refurbished by August Birk, creator.By Chris Pagano ~ Southeast Missourian
The wood carving of Louis Lorimier in Cape Rock Park should last a few more years now that it has been refurbished.
August Birk originally carved the replica of Lorimier from oak.
"If carefully looked after, the wood carvings will last many years," said the 78-year-old, who has carvings a dozen years old standing in his yard.
But for that to happen, carvings need to be inspected regularly so the elements can't get a foothold. Birk found large cracks in the wood, typical of outdoor sculptures.
"If water enters at the right location it can deteriorate from the inside out," he said.
Birk's process of maintaining the outdoor wood carvings has been experimental. The first step toward preservation was treating it with a chemical to keep insects out. A crack filler that also brings the wood together was then applied. The smooth surface then received a coat of outdoor stain. The stain's color, near to the wood's natural color, protects the wood against further damage.
Birk spent about a week making the original carving in 1997, and another week this month refurbishing it.
A new plaque was put on the base of the statue during the refurbishing.
While carving in wood has its limitations, Birk said, he has no plans to change mediums.
"I wouldn't have time to learn new methods," he said.
On Birk's advice, Ron Wilson, American Legion chairman of the Cape Rock Improvement Committee, has been maintaining the wood carving over the years with linseed oil.
It was Wilson who gave Birk the choice to pick the individual for the carving. Birk thought that Lorimier, as the founder of Cape Girardeau, did not receive enough attention.
