St. Mary's Cathedral School placed first in the 11th annual Missouri Society of Professional Engineers' MATHCOUNTS competition Saturday at the Sikeston Junior High School. L.J. Schultz finished second.
MATHCOUNTS is a competition between area junior high schools in both team and individual categories.
The top two students in the individual competition were also from St. Mary's school; first was Sree Vamsi Adusumilli and second was Robert Macklem. Third went to Susan Tansil of L.J. Schultz.
More than 90 students participated.
Schools finished in the following order: St. Mary's, L.J. Schultz, Sikeston Junior High, Fisk Middle, St. Vincent de Paul, Cape Girardeau Central Junior High, Valle Grade, Oak Ridge, Perryville Junior High, Immaculate Conception, Thomas Kelly Elementary, Malden, Charleston Junior High, Scott City, Oran Junior High, Cooter, and Meadow Heights.
The top 15 individual scores went to Adusumilli; Macklem; Tansil; Cecilia Kuntz, St. Vincent de Paul; Pamela Goldenschmidt, Fisk; Jonathan Anderson, Schultz; Boyne Park, Cape Central Junior High; Ben Roeger, Schultz; Brad Deken, Fisk; Laura Cupples, Cape Central Junior High; Shannon Sullivan, Sikeston Junior High; Jonce Chidister, Malden; Akiko Hirao, Schultz; Joe Essner, St. Vincent's; and Erik Morse, Cape Central Junior High.
The state competition will be held in Columbia March 19.
