St. Louis has seen sweltering heat and humidity over much of the past three weeks. Highs in the upper 90s -- and perhaps topping 100 degrees -- are expected through the week, prompting an excessive heat warning.

Several St. Louis area schools cut classes short Wednesday because of the heat.

Health officials are urging relative and friends to check on the elderly.
