PUXICO -- Squirrel season opens on Mingo National Wildlife Refuge Saturday, and will continue through Sept. 30.

The hunting area contains 6,500 acres and is located in the northeast portion of the refuge. All hunters using the area must register at the main refuge entrance on Highway 51, McGee Gate, or the Duck Creek Wildlife Management Area, before hunting.

Hunters must record hours hunting and kill when leaving. Hunters may use a shotgun or .22 caliber rifle.

State hunting regulations apply with a daily limit of six, and a possession limit of 12. Refuge regulations and a map of the area may be obtained at the refuge visitor center, located on Highway 51 north of Puxico.
