JOPLIN, Mo. -- Police said a man shot and killed by Springfield, Missouri, officers was from the Joplin area and had a long criminal history.
Police Chief Paul Williams said in a news release the man shot Wednesday was 30-year-old Joseph Tyndall.
According to the release, Tyndall was involved in a hit-and-run accident early Wednesday, and when police tried stop him, he fled on foot. He was driving a stolen car and was wearing a stolen Joplin Fire Department uniform.
After a chase on foot, during which he was hit with a Taser and bean bags, police said Tyndall pointed a gun at two officers, who fired and killed him.
Tyndall's lengthy criminal record included convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, burglary and receiving stolen property. He was on parole when he was shot.
