Outdoor recreation enthusiasts can get a first look at the new products and equipment available for 1997 this weekend during the 12th annual K-103/KZIM Old Milwaukee Sports Show.
Event organizers expect approximately 10,000 people will attend the three-day event at the Show Me Center. The event is the only one of its kind each year in Cape Girardeau.
"We usually have a good crowd," said Kathy Nicholas of Jackson, who along with her husband Steve organizes the event. "People are ready to get outside around this time of the year and are looking forward to warm weather."
The sports show opens Friday and closes Sunday. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Children 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available at the Show Me Center box office.
More than 40 exhibitors will have displays and informational booths set up the sports show.
The primary attractions each year are the new recreational vehicles, campers, boats, personal water craft and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles on display.
"Basically it shows what's new for '97 in outdoor sports and boating equipment," Nicholas said.
Also represented at the sports show are fishing tackle and equipment dealers, Academy of Scuba Training Inc. of Cape Girardeau, taxidermists, hunting outfitters and firearms dealers.
Both the Illinois and Missouri conservation departments will have representatives available to discuss new state regulations and recreational opportunities available at state conservation areas. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Wapapello will also have an informational booth set up.
A number of area clubs for hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities will have information on club activities and membership, as will national organizations such as the National Rifle Association.
For the third straight year, a tank will be erected on the Show Me Center floor so youngsters can try their hand at trout fishing.
"A lot of people haven't ever fished for trout," Nichols said. "Little kids get very excited when they catch one."
In keeping with the spirit of conservation, the operators of the tank encourage catch and release.
Another activity available will be an eight-hole miniature golf course set up on the second floor of the Show Me Center.
Greg Talbut, Show Me Center business manager, said a number of prizes will be given away over the course of the three-day show.
The top prize is a trip for four days and three nights to Branson.
Also, in honor of the sports show's 10th year at the Show Me Center -- it was held at the A.C. Brase Arena Building its first two years -- Michelson Jewelers in Cape Girardeau is giving away a diamond tennis bracelet.
Those attending the show can register for the drawings at the K-103/KZIM radio booth. Those not attending can obtain an entry form at the Show Me Center box office.
