Eleven of 14 Jackson High Schcool speech and debate team members made it into the finals of their first competitive tournament of the season at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Oct. 21.
Katie Townsend took first place in impromptu speaking and extemporaneous speaking, while Jennifer Hotp was second in radio. Lydia Blades took third place in prose, while Ryan Granger was fourth in impromptu speaking and Hotop in extemporaneous speaking.
At the end of the tournament, first through third sweepstakes trophies are awarded to the top three teams. Jackson placed second out of 11 participating schools.
The JHS Speech and Debate Team competes in approximately 10 tournaments throughout the season which runs from October to March, ending with state competition in Columbia in April.
Jackson hosts a tournament for twelve to 17area schools on Nov. 30 this year at the high school.
Final rounds consist of the top six or seven competitors in each event. The following students went to finals:
