Donna Ellis believes in giving her students hands-on experience. She also believes in recruiting the next generation of students to study Spanish.
The Jackson High School teacher annually takes her Spanish IV students to the district's kindergarten classes to give them experience teaching youngsters some Spanish. It also allows them to exhibit their mastery of the language.
Of course, it also opens the eyes and ears of the youngsters to a new tongue.
On March 30 Ellis took 22 Spanish IV students to the kindergarten classes at Jackson's Primary Annex for part of an afternoon. They read to the students and taught them cheers and songs in Spanish.
One activity required students to write their life story in Spanish in storybook form. Most of them used the software program Story Book Weaver. The books contained pop-up artwork by the students, as well. They read them to the kindergartners in Spanish and in English.
The Spanish students also taught their hosts the Spanish version of "Ten Little Indians," as well as a Spanish cheer for the Jackson football Indians.
