Southwestern Bell Corp., holding company for the Southwestern Bell telephone company, has changed its name to SBC Communications Inc., effective immediately.

The telephone company name remains the same.

SBC has become a much more dynamic and multi-faceted company than it was prior to divestiture, said Edward E. Whitacre Jr., chairman and chief executive.

The divestiture he referred to was the breakup of AT&T in 1984.

Many of AT&T's subsidiaries were put into holding companies with new names.

Southwestern Bell was the only Baby Bell left to stand alone with its old name and territory.

The holding company is based in San Antonio, with about 570 employees. It was based in St. Louis until January 1993.

SBC, with 1993 revenues of $10.5 billion, provides products and services over Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.'s network.

Other SBC businesses include wireless services and equipment, consumer telecommunications equipment, directory advertising and publishing, and cable television interests in both domestic and international markets.

SBC is also involved in telephone service in Mexico through an investment in Telefonos de Mexico.
