The Southeast Missouri State Music Department's Opera Workshop will conduct two one-act comic operas April 30 and May 1.
"The Reluctant Dragon" by John Rutter and Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi" will be performed at Academic Hall's Auditorium.
"The Reluctant Dragon" is a tale about a dragon who prefers penning poetry to fire-breathing combat. A children's story that adults can also enjoy, it is also an allegory about prejudice and reconcilliation.
The jolly swindler, Gianni Schicchi, will transport the audience to Florence, Italy during the 14th century. The story will show how falisfying a will may sometimes serve a worthy cause, particularly when the happiness of two young lovers depends on it.
Members of the community, faculty and students of the school's department of music will be joined by the Southeast Missouri State Orchestra in the presentation of these operas. The April 30 show will begin at 8 p.m. The May 1 show will begin at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children under the age of 18. Tickets may be obtained by calling 651-2141.
