KANSAS CITY -- The Southeast Missourian was recognized Monday by the Missouri-Kansas Associated Press for its commemorative edition on the 1993 flood.
"The Flood of 1993," an insert published in the Sept. 3 Southeast Missourian, received an honorable mention in the small-newspaper category. The award was presented at the Associated Press annual Editors and Publishers Meetings in Kansas City.
The Associated Press flood edition contest received 16 entries from the two states in two population categories.
The Kansas City Star's section, "Trial By Water: A Chronicle of the Great Flood of 1993," won tops honors for newspapers in cities with 50,000 or more residents. Honorable mention in the large-newspaper category went to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
In the small-newspaper category, the Salina Journal's "Raging Waters: The Flood of '93" got top honors, with the Southeast Missourian and the Manhattan Mercury getting honorable mentions.
The judges, from the Quad-City Times in Davenport, Iowa, said the honorable mention winners were "laden with photography and good reporting."
Also at the meeting, Southeast Missourian Editor Ken Newton was elected Missouri president of the bi-state Associated Press Editors and Publishers group. He will serve a two-year term.
Elected vice-president from Missouri was Patti Hoddinott of the Columbia Missourian.
Newton becomes the third Southeast Missourian editor to serve as president of the group. Fred Naeter served as the organization's first president in 1946-47. John Blue led the group from 1970-71.
