Southeast Missouri State University is offering a series of mini workshops teaching beginning computer skills and program usage.

The spring schedule includes introduction to computers, classes on Windows 95/98, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, and business writing basics.

All classes meet from 1 to 4 p.m. in the new Dempster Hall of Business. Parking is available near the building. Special parking permits are issued to registrants.

The cost is $75 for two-day courses and $40 for-one day classes. Textbook and course materials are included. A continuing education unit of .6 will be given for each six-hour section completed. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required.

Introduction to Computers is offered Feb. 3 or March 24. This non-technical introduction to basic computer use includes care and handling of disks, terminology, the mouse, keyboard and special function keys. The course is designed for a beginner with little or no experience.

Introduction to Windows 95/98 is offered Feb. 8 and 10 and March 1 and 3. The course includes basic Windows navigation skills, including the Start menu, Taskbar, My Computer and Windows Explorer. Topics include moving and sizing windows, using dialog boxes, creating folders and subfolders, organizing the desktop, creating shortcuts, copying, moving, deleting and restoring files.

Windows 95/98 for experienced users is offered April 14. It is designed for the experienced Windows user and will cover efficient methods of using the Taskbar, My Computer, Star menu and Windows Explorer.

Introduction to Word for Office 97 is offered Feb. 16 and 18. This is a basic introduction to using computers to produce letters, reports and other documents for business or personal use. It covers creating, saving and printing documents; setting margins, tabs, indents; moving and copying blocks of text; using bullet and number lists; inserting graphics; and inserting text breaks.

Intermediate Word Applications is offered Feb. 23 and 25. The course covers enhanced features of Word to create headers and footers, create tables and columns, use search and replace, insert page breaks, and do mail merges for form letters and labels.

Introduction to Excel will be offered March 8 and 10. This course covers the basic of creating and using spreadsheets. Topics include creating and entering formulas and data input as well as creating charts and basic printing.

Intermediate Excel Applications is offered March 29 and 31. This course goes beyond basics to include working with multiple worksheets/workbooks, creating advanced formulas, printing options and Excel database features.

Introduction to Access will be offered April 6 and 8. This course covers how to create a database, enter and edit records, preview and print databases, find records, create, sort, modify and filter tables, perform queries and develop simple reports.

Intermediate Access Applications will be offered April 20 and 22. This course explores additional database concepts; design data entry screens, create and modify forms; add fields and graphic images to forms; create and design reports; group records; align fields; and create labels.

Business Writing Basics -- Punctuation and Grammar will be offered Feb. 22 and 24. This is a refresher course on punctuation and grammar rules learned years ago. It covers basic punctuation rules for commas, colons, semi-colons and grammar and word usage. Self-check exercises will help polish writing skills.
