"The Principalship in the 1990s" will be the theme when the 26th annual winter conference of the Southeast Missouri Secondary School Principals' Association is held Jan. 15 on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
The conference is sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Secondary School Principals' Association and the university's College of Education.
Registration will begin and refreshments will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Missouriana and Indian rooms in the University Center.
Paul Hill, director of secondary education in New Madrid, will preside over the group, which is the largest regional principal's association in Missouri.
Richard Farmer, chairman of the university's department of educational administration and counseling, will welcome the principals.
Following that, a symposium will be held on "Changing Pathways to Graduation." The symposium will address college entrance requirements, dual enrollment programs, curricula options and raising ACT scores.
Leading those discussions will be Jane Stephens, academic associate in Southeast's provost office; James Evans, Gideon school superintendent; Roger Sherman, director of secondary education for the Sikeston schools; and Cheryl Dunavan, instructor of English at Central High School in Cape Girardeau.
Electronic scheduling, middle-school issues and student motivation also will be addressed during group sessions. Presenting those sessions will be Mike Mcklasky, director of technological services for the Missouri School Board Association; Margaret Theobald, associate professor of secondary education at Southeast; Carolyn Vandeven, principal of L.J. Schultz Middle School in Cape Girardeau; and Daniel Steska, principal of Perryville High School.
A luncheon will be served at noon in the University Center Ballroom. Presiding at the luncheon will be Daniel Beard, assistant principal of Russell Hawkins Junior High School in Jackson.
Cost of the conference is $10, which includes registration and lunch. Parking will be available in Lot 18 and Lot 44, off Henderson Avenue.
