Sports lovers have a new major to choose from at Southeast Missouri State University.
The physical education department is offering a bachelor of science degree in sport management, as well as a master of science degree in administration with an athletic administration option, and a master of arts degree in school administration with an athletic administration option.
Dr. Linda Schoonmaker, coordinator of the programs, said the undergraduate sport management program is the only one of its kind at a public institution in Missouri.
The bachelor of science and the minor in sport management combine sport management and business classes to prepare graduates for entry level positions in the sports industry. The master of arts in school administration with an option in athletic administration is designed to prepare teachers and coaches for positions in athletic administration.
"Sport industry leaders have realized that they need academically prepared professionals in the industry," said Schoonmaker. "Our goal is to provide our students with a strong foundation so that they can be competitive for entry level positions in the sport industry."
Schoonmaker said sport management majors are currently doing internships and practice with the Southeast athletic department at the Show Me Center. She said these departments have been very cooperative and supportive in the launching of the new programs.
