The book explores Christianity's long-term and variable construction of Mary Magdalen's character, history and meaning, and its diverse effects on religious and worldly life, and on art and popular culture all over Christendom, according to Anne Hollander of The New Yorker.

Haskins' lecture is being sponsored by the departments of art, philosophy and religion, and the College of Liberal Arts at Southeast. A reception will immediately follow the lecture, which is open to the public.
