The provost and vice president of college development at Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing and Allied Health in Omaha will be keynote speaker for Trends in Medical-Surgical Nursing '94, a seminar for medical-surgical and critical-care nurses and nursing students.
The seminar, hosted by Southeast Missouri Hospital, will be held Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn. It will focus on professional retention and infectious diseases.
A highlight of the seminar will be the annual Erna Deneke Kiehne Distinguished Lecture presented this year by Dr. Jean Beyer.
The lecture series honors the late Erna Deneke Kiehne, a member of Southeast's nursing staff for 31 years. Keihne served as director of nurses from 1943 to 1969 and as obstetrics supervisor until her retirement in 1973. She died in 1984.
Beyer's presentation will be an in-depth discussion of "Professional Retention: People Profit for the 1990s."
Beyer completed her bachelor-of-science and master-of-science degree in nursing and her doctorate in industrial psychology at the University of Nebraska. Prior to becoming provost of the college in 1989, Beyer was an assistant professor at the college.
For the past 12 years, Beyer has been a national workshop presenter on key issues in nursing, including professional retention, to more than 120,000 participants. She also has served as a consultant to nine schools of nursing on the counseling needs of today's students and meeting the needs of the adult learner.
Also on the seminar faculty are Cape Girardeau physician, Dr. Theodore J. Grieshop, and Pamela Joggerst, infection control nurse at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
The seminar has been approved by the Missouri Nurses Association for 6.3 contact hours. Registration is $30 for nurses and $10 for students.
