The American Heart Association's upcoming American Heart Walk fund-raiser got a boost from a $7,500 donation from Southeast Missouri Hospital.
The donation was made Tuesday night at a Heart Walk kickoff at Bent Creek Golf Course Clubhouse. At the kickoff, about 30 team captains received information about the walk, which will be held Oct. 2.
The captains, representing various businesses in the area, received information about organizing teams for the walk and tips on collection donations.
It is hoped the donation from Southeast Missouri Hospital will get walkers excited about participating and collecting money, said Stephanie Bledsoe with AHA.
About 300 residents of Cape Girardeau County are expected to participate in the Oct. 2 walk. Between now and then, they will be asking for donations for walking the course.
Funds raised at the walk, including the hospital donation, will be used to fund AHA research support and educational and community programs, said Coach Gary Garner, honorary chairman of the American Heart Walk.
There are four active research centers in Missouri. It is also an educational event that emphasizes the benefits of an active lifestyle.
For more information on participating in the walk, call the American Heart Association, 335-3240.
